Heighten Your Awareness Through Breath

"Be Here & Now", I feel like it could be the next slogan plastered on signs and coffee mugs (something to rival the "Keep Calm & Carry On" crowd!) Comparisons aside, it's something we all need to be reminded of. Don't let the corporate's fool you, today's technology is designed to be habit forming – not those good habits like brushing your teeth – more like that persistent itch you have to scratch!

Yes I'm referring to that familiar bleep from your phone, or that message in the corner of the screen. Recent psychological studies show that these seemingly minute but constant distractions, and the perceived need to be available and respond 24/7 are linked to increased anxiety among teenagers. And it won't be just teenagers... we are all guilty of escaping 'the moment' in our quest to scratch that technological itch! So aside from ditching the devices how do we remain present and in the moment? The answer is simple, through our breath and our awareness.

By breathing fully and deeply we heighten our state of awareness. Most people know that in a time of high-anxiety they should take 3 slow deep breaths and exhale fully, however were you aware of the benefits of breathing to bring you into the present moment and to awaken your senses. As well as the myriad of health benefits (lowered blood pressure, increased vitality, improved respiratory function...) conscious breathing improves our power of mental concentration and observation, heightens intuition and balances subtle energy systems affecting all the bodies: physical, emotional, mental & spiritual.

Through our breath we have the power to take back control of our bodies and our experiences. If you have ever wondered why when you are on the table I have asked you to breathe into a particular spot, it is for these reasons below:

Focus + Energy = POWER

Focus + Breath = AWARENESS STATE CHANGE

Focus + Movement = EMOTIONAL STATE CHANGE

Focus + Energy + Breath + Movement = WISDOM
