Success is Liking Yourself

Success is liking yourself,
Liking what you do,
And liking how you do it.

Maya Angelou

There are many different quotations and ways to define success, however the one above by Maya Angelou (the American writer and civil rights activist), has to be my favourite. In a world where marketers would increasing have us judge success by the number of assets a person has, how many overseas holidays they take and how prestigious their job sounds; success appears to be measured by others and not ourselves. What we forget is that success is very much an individual pursuit tied to goals and ambitions and not a one size fits all commodity. If you are a studier of the human race like I am, you will know that some of the poorest people 'feel' the wealthiest and some of the wealthiest complain about being unhappy and unfulfilled. Everything is about perspective, how we look at the world and ourselves.

Everyone has the right to improve themselves and their living conditions. In fact it is healthy to want to do this, however often the way we go about this can be 'unhealthy' and create internal conflict. Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking we can overcome what we perceive as 'minor flaws' to our perfect job, or living situation. And of course a lot of times this is true (let's face it there is always some element of a job, or environment, that we don't like) however beware, at the end of the day you still have to like yourself. So when making those big decisions always ask yourself, "does this allow me to be the person I want to be?"

When we think about success, it is often the big stuff in life we concentrate on: career, family, house, cars etc. However when you are having a particularly bad day (perhaps even year), count it as a success if you can get through the day and still have a positive attitude. As they say Rome wasn't built in a day and most successful people fail repeatedly before they hit the jackpot. Keep the vision, keep the positive attitude, keep going and keep it real. Life is all about change and to be successful you need to learn to embrace change, whatever that may mean, and find ways to work it to your advantage. So this year when drawing up your list of goals remember to focus on what's really important to you, give yourself time, be creative and celebrate your successes - even if it is just getting through a challenging day with a smile on your face.
